Which 4x4 for the Outer Banks Beach? The Base, the Sweet Spot and the One Above It

Spec sheets tell you what a vehicle has. The sand tells you how it feels: 45 minutes of North Carolina Highway 12, the two-lane road up the Outer Banks, then the ramp, the soft stretch past the last house, the top off or the back window down. These comparisons start with the feel and keep the numbers short. First each model against itself: the base, the off-road sweet spot and the one above it. Then two of them head to head.

The opinions on this page come from Beach4x4, our rental company in Kill Devil Hills, whose 4x4s run the Carova beach every day of the season. The Beach Test Drive is our drive-before-you-buy program: a new vehicle, this beach, nobody selling. Planned for summer 2027.

Each one against itself: the base, the sweet spot and the one above it

Every model has a trim that was built for this kind of sand and a trim that was built for somewhere else. Starting prices, the off-road gear that matters here, and the rung where the money stops showing up on the beach.

Head to head

Two of them, how each feels on the road and on the sand, the few numbers that matter here, and the best comparison video we could find.

Bronco or Wrangler?

Both take the top off. One rides like an SUV on Highway 12; the other flexes like a Jeep on the sand. On The Beach Test Drive site, since both are on its 2027 lineup.

Land Cruiser or 4Runner?

Same frame, same hybrid. One never asks you to think about four-wheel drive; the other rolls its back window down.

How we compare them

Feel first.

How each one rides on Highway 12, how it floats in the soft sand, what the back seat is like, and who tends to fall for it. Drawn from the published reviews and from six years of running four-wheel drives on this beach.

The spec sheet, kept short.

Suspension, four-wheel drive, tires, lockers, seats, what comes off and what rolls down. Current model year, from the factory, with the makers’ starting prices and the date we looked.

Then drive it.

Rent one from Beach4x4 this weekend, or put a new one on the sand for five and a half hours with The Beach Test Drive, planned for summer 2027.

Frequently asked questions

Which one is better on the sand?

Both will do this beach, aired down and in four-wheel drive. The difference is how each one feels doing it, and that is what the drive experience is for.

Can I drive both on the sand before I decide?

Yes. The Beach Test Drive, our drive-before-you-buy program planned for summer 2027, puts shoppers in new adventure vehicles for five and a half hours on the Carova sand, and lets a second driver take a second vehicle the same day. Until then, Beach4x4, our rental company in Kill Devil Hills, rents 4x4s for this beach by the day or the week.

Do you take sides?

No. Nobody rides along and nobody steers you toward one. The reviews and the video we link are theirs, not ours. If neither one is right, you found out on the sand, not after you bought one.

Prices on this page are the makers’ published starting prices on the dates shown and change with every model year. Dealers in The Beach Test Drive program sell to its drivers at the factory invoice, which is a different number; that program explains it. Opinions on how each trim feels are ours, drawn from the published equipment lists and from running four-wheel drives on this beach.
