Getting to North Swan Beach

From the end of NC-12 in Corolla, drive north along the beach for about 4–6 miles. North Swan Beach picks up where Swan Beach ends and runs north toward Carova. Penny’s Hill is right in the middle of this stretch on the soundside. Most rental homes have addresses on Sandfiddler Road or Ocean Pearl Road behind the dunes.

Wild Horses

North Swan Beach is one of the best areas to see the Corolla wild horses. They graze in yards, on the dunes, and occasionally on the beach itself. By Currituck County law you must stay at least 50 feet away from them and never feed them. Approaching, touching, or feeding the horses carries fines up to $500.

Practical Tips

Always check the tide chart before driving in or out. At high tide, soft sand against the dunes can be brutal for even experienced drivers. Bring drinking water, snacks, a tire gauge, and a portable air compressor — there’s nothing for miles. If you’re staying in a rental, ask the property manager for the easiest beach entry approach and any local landmarks to navigate by.
