Things to Do in Hatteras Village NC: Ferry, Museum & Quiet Beaches

Hatteras Village is the southernmost town on Hatteras Island and the gateway to Ocracoke via the free state ferry. With its working harbor, the Graveyard of the Atlantic Museum, and some of the widest, least-crowded beaches on the island, it offers a more authentic Outer Banks experience than the larger northern towns.

Take the Ferry to Ocracoke

The Hatteras-Ocracoke Ferry is free and runs daily year-round. Crossing time is about an hour. You can take your 4×4 across to access Ocracoke’s ramps. Reserve in advance during peak season; check current schedule at NCDOT Ferry.

Visit the Graveyard of the Atlantic Museum

Free admission. Exhibits cover the 5,000+ shipwrecks along the Outer Banks coast, the U-boat battles of WWII, and lifesaving station history. Highly rated even by visitors who aren’t typically “museum people.” Open daily in season.

Charter a Fishing Boat

Hatteras Village is one of the premier offshore fishing ports on the East Coast. Charter boats target marlin, sailfish, tuna, dolphin (mahi), and wahoo in the Gulf Stream. Half-day inshore charters for puppy drum, sea trout, and flounder. Book ahead for summer weekends.

Beach Driving via Ramp 55

Ramp 55 provides ORV access to some of the widest, least crowded beaches on Hatteras. Subject to closures for shorebird nesting. The beach near the inlet is excellent for shelling and surf fishing.

Explore the Harbor

Working commercial harbor with charter boats, recreational vessels, and the occasional research ship. Several waterfront restaurants. Pelicans and other shorebirds congregate around cleaning stations.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much is the Hatteras-Ocracoke Ferry?

Free for passengers and vehicles. Reservations are recommended in summer; walk-on standby is available. Check the NCDOT Ferry site for current schedule and reservation policies — they change seasonally.

Is the Graveyard of the Atlantic Museum worth visiting?

Yes — consistently rated as one of the best museums on the Outer Banks. Engaging exhibits, free admission, and roughly 1-2 hours of content. Excellent rainy-day option.

Can I drive on the beach in Hatteras Village?

Yes, via NPS Ramp 55 with a valid ORV permit. The beaches near Hatteras Inlet are particularly wide and less crowded than further north. Subject to seasonal shorebird closures.

Where do offshore charter boats fish?

They run east 30-50 miles to the Gulf Stream. The continental shelf is closer to Hatteras than almost anywhere else on the East Coast, which is why the area is so famous for offshore fishing.

Is Hatteras Village a good base for a quiet trip?

Yes — it has the least summer crowds of the major Hatteras towns and a more working-village feel. Good choice for visitors who want authentic OBX character and aren’t looking for nightlife or extensive shopping.
